Bruce first wore this tank on June 24, 1972. HK-TVB television station broadcast a live fund-raising event in aid of the victims of a devastating landslide that occurred the week before on June 18th. Bruce agreed to come on the show in a moment's notice. He brought Brandon along to help him with his demonstrations. During the evening, Bruce appeared several times, and interacted with the studio audience and viewers at home to support them with their donations. Bruce personally donated $10,000 (the largest single donation). In total, over $8 Million was raised for the relief fund.
“Everybody loved Bruce. His casual western attire was accepted by the Chinese people who were very proud because of his frankness and influence in the western world. His appearance that evening alongside Brandon was very good, as it showed the bonding between them - ‘father and son’ ... Brandon was very like-able, and the people in the studio and viewers liked him too.”
“The viewers were certainly wowed by him, as he was this superhero, that made the Chinese people proud for him to represent their race.we had felt we were looked down upon by the western world, but along came Bruce and he stood out.”
